Stop Your Dog From Jumping Up To People With The Following Approach

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Dogs’ jumping up on people is embarrassing, annoying and dangerous for all involved. Stop your dog from jumping up to people with the following advice.

You are probably annoyed when your dog starts jumping up on you. Guess what, so is anyone who comes to visit. This behavior may have been cute when your dog was a puppy; but, as he has gotten older, it is nothing short of a nuisance.

Imagine you just put on clean and neatly pressed clothes and you dog jumps all over you.

A small child or elderly person who comes near your dog is in danger of being knocked over when your dog jumps up on them.

Your dog jumps up on people because he’s happy to see them.

Your dog may jump on you to get your attention. Maybe you rewarded the dog somehow in the past. It may also be done to declare supremacy over you and your guests.

It is up to you to teach your dog that jumping up on people is not appropriate.

When a dog behaves in an inappropriate manner, everyone has to handle the situation the same way. That way your dog will learn that it is never okay to act like that. Reprimanding your dog is not going to work either.

Teach your dog that they will not get any attention from you when they jump on you. Do this by turning away from him, not making eye contact or saying anything to him when he jumps.

Praise you dog and pet him when the bad behavior is over. Practicing this step constantly will help your dog learn that more attention is given when he keeps all four paws on the floor.

Make your dog focus on something else like sitting when he becomes excited. This technique is often referred to as alternate behavior training, and is very effective.

Reinforcing positive behavior when teaching your dog not to jump is quiet simple. Be consistent in your efforts and the problem will disappear. Follow the methods that I have described and you will definitely be on the right track towards correcting his inappropriate behavior.
